What Did Porn Bring to Humanity?

Porn is popular not only because there is a lot of nudity in it, but also due to the application of revolutionary technology in it. Eroticism is driven by innovation – from chatbots to virtual reality – all these were and are widely applied in the porn industry. There is nothing surprising in the fact that most modern technology has come to us from porn. Pornography has laid the foundation for the most important technologies of our time – from the iPhone’s touchscreen to sexual experience in virtual reality.

1. Printed pornography

Despite the fact that many sources point out the short film “Maria Going to Sleep” was the ancestor of pornography, the erotic genre emerged much earlier that time. The typewriter Johann Gutenberg both promoted the development and recognition of pornography. Literary creativity was gaining momentum, and the cost of printing was declining. But do you know which outstanding book belongs to the erotic genre? It was “The Canterbury Tales” by Jeffrey Chaucer that was not written for a wide range of readers and was considered scandalous.

2. Super 8 Camcorders

It was in 1958 when a young British photographer Harrison Marks began shooting short videos on an 8 mm film. The shots covered underdressed girls posing for the camera. As a result, these videos became known as glamorous home videos. This is how the new technology has evolved, and sales of 8mm cameras and projectors have taken off. Super 8 camcorders were cheap and easy to use. Due to their convenience, these camcorders have become the standard device in the porn industry.

3. Videocassettes

In the late 1970s, the battle for the title of the best technology for watching home video began. It was Betamax and VHS who competed on the market. The war unleashed pornographers selling porn exclusively on videotapes. At that time, 50% of all videotapes sold in the United States was porn. In the early 2000s, erotica has changed the priorities of video formats. This time, the DVD format became widely used by all.

4. Blue-Ray Discs

Just like it was with the battle of video formats in the 70s and 90s, the home video industry has once again caused the invention associated with the use of Blue-Ray discs. The best thing about the invention was related to the fact that up to nine hours of high-def video could be recorded on such discs, which meant even more content to be captured.

5. Cable TV

You will never find this fact in history books, but you can say “thank you” for the presence of cable television to the ancestor of Girls Gone Wild. Even before the Playboy channel has been born, there was a public cable channel in Manhattan with over 80,000 subscribers. On that channel, George Urban’s program “The Ugly George Hour of Truth, Sex and Violence” could be watched. The show was about the girls from the streets of Manhattan being forced to undress in front of the camera. After thirteen episodes of this show, the number of subscribers exceeded 100 thousand. By the end of the second transfer season, this number had increased to 300 thousand.

It is obvious that the porn industry has brought a lot of revolutionary things and inventions to humankind. Some of them we couldn’t even associate with the porn industry and erotics.
